Helicopter (ADELAIDE)
The ABC says it's being overwhelmed by support from around the world, as it awaits
official confirmation of the deaths of three newsmen in a helicopter crash in South Australia.
Veteran reporter PAUL LOCKYER, cameraman JOHN BEAN and pilot GARY TICEHURST were in
a chopper that went down in the Lake Eyre region last night.
ABC head of news gathering DON LANGE says calls have been coming in from news people
across the country and overseas, who've worked with the experienced trio.
He says LOCKYER was one of the ABC'S most popular reporters - a marvellous, self-effacing
individual with bucketloads of humility.
TICEHURST, he says, was a classic pilot with unbelievable skills, who covered 29 Sydney
to Hobart yacht races, while BEAN was an award-winning cameraman and a terrific bloke.
Aust Stocks (SYDNEY)
The Australian share market has had its biggest fall in two weeks, after US and European
stocks slumped overnight on fears of a new recession.
At 11am (AEST), the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was DOWN 123 points at 4,128, while
the broader All Ordinaries was DOWN 122 points at 4,198.
It's the market's biggest fall since it slumped more than four per cent on August five.
Thomson Abbott (MELBOURNE)
Opposition Leader TONY ABBOTT has again declined to say whether he would sack a colleague
in the same situation as embattled federal Labor MP CRAIG THOMSON.
Mr THOMSON, the member for Dobell on the New South Wales central coast, is facing scrutiny
over allegations his former union credit card was used to pay for prostitutes and that
the NSW branch of the ALP paid a 90-thousand dollar legal bill of his so he could avoid
bankruptcy.
When asked if he would sack a colleague in the same predicament, Mr ABBOTT said he
didn't have all the details but that he would do things differently to Prime Minister
JULIA GILLARD.
He's told the Nine Network he would never express full confidence in a member without
asking questions - and Ms GILLARD should call an official investigation into the matter.
COAG (CANBERRA)
The carbon tax will be one of the main issues discussed at today's Council of Australian
Governments meeting in Canberra.
Ahead of the meeting, New South Wales Premier BARRY O'FARRELL has told reporters the
proposed tax should be ditched because of the uncertainty in the global economy - a view
shared by Victorian Premier TED BAILLIEU.
However South Australian Premier MIKE RANN says now isn't the time to play political
games over a carbon price and people expect their politicians to get on with it in the
national interest.
Israel Ambush Aust (CANBERRA)
The Australian government has condemned the terrorist attacks in southern Israel in
which six people have been killed.
Acting Foreign Minister CRAIG EMERSON says the attacks were indefensible and undermine
efforts towards peace and security in the region.
He says the Australian government stands with the people of Israel against these brutal
actions and calls for those responsible to be brought to justice.
Morcombe (BRISBANE)
Police divers in Queensland have returned to the search for DANIEL MORCOMBE's body,
spurred on by the missing schoolboy's family.
About 50 State Emergency Service personnel and 25 police officers, including five forensic
officers and four police divers, have started the sixth day of scouring bushland at Beerwah,
on the Sunshine Coast.
The search was sparked by the weekend arrest of 41-year-old Perth man BRETT PETER COWAN,
who's been charged with DANIEL's murder.
BRUCE MORCOMBE, DANIEL's father, has urged police and volunteers at the muddy search
site to keep going following the discovery of a shoe on Wednesday.
The shoe is to undergo forensic testing to determine if it's linked to the case.
Floods Inquiry (BRISBANE)
The commission of inquiry into Queensland's summer floods will offer confidentiality
to flood-affected people who want to dob in a bad insurance company.
The Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry is preparing for its second round of hearings
in September and October, which will examine the conduct of insurers.
A spokesman for the inquiry says they're interested in hearing how insurance companies
dealt with claims and responded to complaints, and also wants to hear any positive feedback
on insurers, as is considers how the industry can be improved.
Belgium Storm (HASSELT)
A violent storm has swept through an open-air music festival in Belgium, killing at
least three people and injuring dozens more.
People at the three-day Pukkelpop festival have described scenes of panic as large
hailstones pelted the crowds.
20-year-old New Zealander BRINNIE GARDNER says it was crazy, as all the concert structures
collapsed.
Only days ago, five people were killed when parts of a stage collapsed at the Indiana
State Fair in Indianapolis.
Briefly in other news ..
Libya (TRIPOLI)
Several explosions have rocked the Libyan capital Tripoli, amid reports that strongman
MUAMMAR GADDAFI is preparing to leave the country.
Groves (BRISBANE)
Former ABC Learning Centres boss EDDY GROVES will stand trial in May next year on a
charge relating to the collapse of Australia's biggest childcare chain.
in Finance ..
At 1100 AEST, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was DOWN 123 points at 4,128, while the
broader All Ordinaries was DOWN 122 points at 4,198.
The Australian dollar was at 103.40 US cents, DOWN from $104.83 US cents at the close yesterday.
The price of spot gold in Sydney is 18-hundred-and-36 US dollars per fine ounce, UP
from yesterday's local close.
in Sport ..
RL Tigers (SYDNEY)
Wests Tigers star LOTE TUQIRI has left the door open for an NRL return against Parramatta
on Sunday.
TUQIRI says the plan is to give his quad injury another week but that may change.
The dual international has had a horror run with injury, managing only five matches
all season and just two since round three.
AFL Eagles (MELBOURNE)
Essendon hope key-position duo MICHAEL HURLEY and TAYTE PEARS will return straight
to AFL action next weekend after sitting out tomorrow's finals-defining clash with West
Coast.
HURLEY has a hot spot in his foot, while PEARS has a small crack in his leg.
Midfielder RICKY DYSON was dropped by the Bombers, who recalled ruckman TOM BELLCHAMBERS,
DAVID MYERS and NATHAN LOVETT-MURRAY to take on West Coast.
The Eagles have been strengthened by the return of captain DARREN GLASS and BEAU WATERS.
Super Waratahs (SYDNEY)
Former Wallabies hooker MICHAEL FOLEY has been promoted to head coach of the NSW Waratahs
on a three-year contract.
He takes over from CHRIS HICKEY who guided the Super Rugby team for three years.
FOLEY, a member of the Wallabies' 1999 World Cup-winning squad, was previously the
Waratahs' forwards coach.

WA:War vet families swell WA Anzac Day ranks
PERTH, April 22 AAP - While the ranks of older diggers are thinning, younger relatives
are taking their places at Anzac Day services and marches and keeping numbers up, a West
Australian RSL official says.
Vietnam war veteran Denis Connelly says around 50,000 people are again expected to
attend the dawn service and march on Monday in Perth.
The editor of The Listening Post magazine for RSL members said many World War II veterans
were "falling off the perch" or getting frail but their younger relatives were taking
their places on Anzac Day.
"We're getting those involved now. They're marching with their medals and marching
in their fathers' and grandfathers' units."
Under a RSL protocol, recipients of medals wear them on their left breast, while their
descendants can wear them on their right breast.
On Monday, older veterans will march if they can, while frailer ones will be carried
in jeeps, trucks and other vehicles.
"You mention Anzac to some of the old diggers and the lights go on and the smile comes
up and the suit gets dusted off and they really look forward to the day," Mr Connelly,
a former RAAF member, told AAP.
The 6am (WST) dawn service at Kings Park will be followed by a gunfire breakfast from
7am, then a march starts at 9.30am from the city to the Esplanade Reserve where an Anzac
Day service will be held at 11am.
Other Anzac Day services are being held across WA including Albany.
The southern town is where a dawn service was first organised by Anglican Reverend
Arthur White more than 80 years ago to commemorate Australians who fell in the Great War.
In November 1914, a convoy assembled off Albany to carry 30,000 Australian and New
Zealand troops to the war in Europe.
The town is gearing up for big Anzac Day events in 2014 and 2015 to commemorate the
departure of the convoy and the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.

animals out of the path of the cyclone.
YASI INDUSTRY (SYDNEY)

are set for more hardship as tropical cyclone Yasi nears the coast.
Ports have also been closed and the nation's largest rail freight company has suspended
operations on two coal lines.
Cane farmers have already been hampered by Queensland's wet weather and floods .. reducing
the size and value of the 2010 harvest.

east coast.

a low taxing one .. but the floods call for new fiscal stringency.

coach LEIGH NUGENT has confirmed he's been in regular contact.
RATES (SYDNEY)
The Reserve Bank has spared borrowers an interest rate rise today .. leaving the cash
rate at 4.75 per cent in a widely expected move .. citing low inflation and the temporary
adverse effect of the Queensland floods on the nation's economy.

the December quarter.
This compares with a downwardly revised 0.3 per cent fall in the September quarter.

ELECTRICITY SCRAP (SYDNEY)
The New South Wales Government has abandoned any further privatisation of the state's
electricity sector .. after the failure of the second tranche of a planned sale.

An angry Treasurer ERIC ROOZENDAAL has accused the opposition of scaring off bidders
for the second round of the state's power sale.
EGYPT PROTEST (CAIRO)
Egypt's military has pledged not to fire on protesters .. in a sign that army support

costing the prime minister support within the ALP and among voters .. who see the democratic
value of his work.

FED:Rural MPs may finally meet leaders
CANBERRA, Aug 25 AAP - Three rural independents who could decide Australia's next prime
minister are formulating a roadmap to power which they'll present to both Julia Gillard
and Tony Abbott.
The MPs - Tony Windsor, Rob Oakeshott and Bob Katter - will meet together in Canberra
on Wednesday morning ahead of a National Press Club forum at lunchtime.
It's possible they'll then get together with the prime minister and opposition leader
in the afternoon.
Mr Windsor said late on Tuesday night that the trio was putting together a document
for the leaders that will contain "a range of issues and questions".
AAP understands it will essentially be a roadmap setting out the path Ms Gillard and
Mr Abbott should follow in their bid to pull together a minority government.
Neither Labor nor the coalition has the 76 seats required to form government in its own right.
Mr Windsor stressed negotiations are going to take a while.
"If indeed we do meet with them (Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott) don't expect anything definitive
out of that," he said.
"The meetings we're having now are just the start of the process, not the finish."

FED: Vitamins linked to breast cancer: study
Australia's 2.5 billion dollar complementary health industry is urging consumers not
to panic .. after a study linked a daily intake of multi-vitamins with an increased risk
of breast cancer.
The 10 year study of more than 35 thousand women found those who regularly took a multi-vitamin
pill increased the risk of developing a tumour by 19 per cent.
News Limited says the results have been greeted with interest and caution by Australian experts.
Researchers say one plausible explanation is that taking vitamin and mineral supplements
significantly increases the density of breast tissue .. a strong risk factor for breast
cancer.

Vic: Ski resorts welcome early icy blast and snow dumps
MELBOURNE, April 26 AAP - The Victorian ski season might still be six weeks away, but
the state's two main ski resorts are already reporting snowfalls of up to 20 centimetres.
As a cold snap and stormy weather hit different parts of the state, Mount Hotham and
Falls Creek both welcomed more than a dusting of the white stuff, prompting hopes of another
bumper ski season.
Independent weather service Skipress said up to 10cm of snow fell overnight at Falls
Creek, one of the state's biggest ski resorts, but it was the 20cm at Mt Hotham that had
weather watchers drooling with expectations of another successful season.
"If these weather predictions are correct, 2009 looks like being the third bumper ski
season in a row. This would be great news for all Australian ski resorts," Mt Hotham weather
forecaster Pete Taylor said.
Maureen Gearon, of the Victorian Snow Reporting Service (VSRS), said the snowfalls
overnight on Saturday and into Sunday were "very exciting".
"It's always great to see early snowfalls. It gets people very excited about what lies
ahead," she told AAP.
"The main grounds are getting colder and we're expecting more snow today and tomorrow."
As well as Falls Creek and Hotham, Ms Gearon said other resorts including Mount Baw
Baw and Lake Mountain had also recorded snowfalls of up to 10cm.
"Obviously, Lake Mountain was badly affected during the bushfires, so it's great that
it is getting snow now," she added.
"There was also a wedding up at Baw Baw yesterday, so that was very much a white wedding
in the true sense of the word - instead of confetti, they were throwing snow."
Weather bureau duty forecaster Stuart Coombs told AAP that temperatures fell to minus
three and minus four at different alpine areas, with sub-zero temperatures expected to
continue.

SA: Pantic's porn conviction overturned
By Liza Kappelle
ADELAIDE, Aug 15 AAP - An Adelaide man named as a person of interest in Dianne Brimble's
cruise ship death has had his conviction for importing pornography overturned.
Petar Vladmir Pantic, 31, was found guilty in his absence in the Adelaide Magistrates
Court on July 25, of bringing DVDs containing images of bestiality and bondage into Australia
last year.
However, Adelaide Magistrate Simon Smart overturned Pantic's conviction today after
barrister David Edwardson QC said he had been retained to appear for Pantic on that day
- but had forgotten to record it in his diary.
Magistrate Smart overturned the conviction "in the interest of justice" meaning the
matter will be reheard.
"Through no fault of his that legal representation was not there," Mr Smart said.
"Accordingly I set aside the conviction."
He remanded the matter to October 17.
Customs officers allegedly found the DVDs after Pantic flew in to Adelaide on September
4, 2007, from Serbia via Singapore.
Mrs Brimble, a Brisbane mother of three, died on board the P&O liner Pacific Sky in
September 2002 from a toxic mix of alcohol and the illicit drug fantasy.
An inquest into her death was told she had sex with Adelaide man Mark Wilhelm after
being given fantasy, and her naked body was found on the floor of the cabin he shared
with Leo Silvestri, Ryan Kuchel and Matthew Slade.
The other men named as persons of interest were Petar Pantic, Luigi Vitale, Dragan
Losic and Charlie Kambouris.

EDS: Corrects sex of child from son to daughter in first par
CANBERRA, April 6 AAP - A South Australian woman has given birth to her father's daughter
after the couple had sex.
John and Jenny Deaves reunited 30 years after Mr Deaves separated from Jenny's mother.
Jenny was 31 and just two weeks after meeting, father and daughter had sex.
"John and I are in this relationship as consenting adults," Mrs Deaves told the Nine
Network's 60 Minutes tonight.
"We are just asking for a little bit of respect and understanding."
Their nine-month-old daughter Celeste, shown on TV, appears fit and healthy.
Mrs Deaves said soon after reuniting with her father she began to see him as a man
first and her father second.
"I was looking at him, sort of going, oh, he's not too bad.
"Like you might look at a man across the bar at a nightclub."
Mrs Deaves brought two children, Samantha and Alex, into the relationship after splitting
from her former partner.
Mr Deaves admitted that he "initially" thought having sex with his daughter was wrong.
"Emotions take over, as people no doubt realise, there are times during your life where
emotions do rule the heart, it rules the head," he said.
"I knew it was illegal, of course I knew it was illegal but you know, so what."
Mrs Deaves said the physical relationship with her father was like "a sexual relationship
with any other man".
For Mr Deaves the sexual relationship was "absolutely fantastic".
A South Australian police media spokesman tonight told AAP "the couple is being monitored".

A conference on the Gold Coast has heard natural disasters have increased several-fold
since the 1950's .. and will continue to do so because of climate change.
Professor HARTWIG DE HAEN .. who used to work for the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation
.. says 79 thousand people people die from natural disasters like droughts and floods
each year.
And he says another 200 million more are directly affected.
Professor DE HAEN says the number of natural disasters is growing rapidly .. with the

PERTH, April 6 AAP - Today's unemployment rate reflects the strength of the Australian

The figures were "very, very good", Mr Howard told journalists in Perth.
"The unemployment rate nationally has fallen to five per cent, there is a 27,000 rise
in people employed last month," Mr Howard said.

Samba stars fail to shine once again.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
BRAZIL came into the Olympics without ever having won gold in the football and after a 3-0 defeat to arch rivals Argentina they will have to wait another four years.Aa The Samba stars have won the World Cup a record five times but surprisingly are yet to shine on the Olympic stage. In yesterday's semi-final Brazil finished with nine men withAa Lucas and substitute Thiago Neves both sent off for ugly fouls on Javier Mascherano late in the second half.Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero broke the deadlock seven minutes after the interval when Angel Di Maria's pass appeared to strike his upper arm before flying into the net. Aguero scored his second goal five minutes later after Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi released defender Pablo Zabaleta on the right and his pass was slotted home from close range with the Brazilian defence in a shambles. Skipper and over-age midfielder Juan Riquelme killed off the Brazilians with a 76th minute penalty after Aguero was brought down by Bayern Munich defender Breno. It went from bad to worse for Brazil with Lucas and Thiago Neves both losing their cool and given straight red cards for chopping down Mascherano inside the last nine minutes.Brazil's hopes vanished when crowd favourite Ronaldinho's free kick slammed into the upright and a follow-up goal was disallowed for offside just after Aguero's second goal.In the final Argentina will play Nigeria after the West Africans destroyed Belgium 4-1 in yesterday's other semi-final.Olubayo Adefemi opened the scoring in the 17th minute and Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi netted a brace before Chibuzor Okonkwo hammered the final nail in Belgium's coffin. Substitute Laurent Ciman pulled one back in the dying minutes but it was too little too late. And the Nigerians are going all out for the gold medal. "It was unbelievable, unbelievable. You just have to look at the scoreboard," said Nigeria's ecstatic coach Samson Siasia."We are going for gold."
