Vic: Ski resorts welcome early icy blast and snow dumps
MELBOURNE, April 26 AAP - The Victorian ski season might still be six weeks away, but
the state's two main ski resorts are already reporting snowfalls of up to 20 centimetres.
As a cold snap and stormy weather hit different parts of the state, Mount Hotham and
Falls Creek both welcomed more than a dusting of the white stuff, prompting hopes of another
bumper ski season.
Independent weather service Skipress said up to 10cm of snow fell overnight at Falls
Creek, one of the state's biggest ski resorts, but it was the 20cm at Mt Hotham that had
weather watchers drooling with expectations of another successful season.
"If these weather predictions are correct, 2009 looks like being the third bumper ski
season in a row. This would be great news for all Australian ski resorts," Mt Hotham weather
forecaster Pete Taylor said.
Maureen Gearon, of the Victorian Snow Reporting Service (VSRS), said the snowfalls
overnight on Saturday and into Sunday were "very exciting".
"It's always great to see early snowfalls. It gets people very excited about what lies
ahead," she told AAP.
"The main grounds are getting colder and we're expecting more snow today and tomorrow."
As well as Falls Creek and Hotham, Ms Gearon said other resorts including Mount Baw
Baw and Lake Mountain had also recorded snowfalls of up to 10cm.
"Obviously, Lake Mountain was badly affected during the bushfires, so it's great that
it is getting snow now," she added.
"There was also a wedding up at Baw Baw yesterday, so that was very much a white wedding
in the true sense of the word - instead of confetti, they were throwing snow."
Weather bureau duty forecaster Stuart Coombs told AAP that temperatures fell to minus
three and minus four at different alpine areas, with sub-zero temperatures expected to
continue.
