Qld: Natural disasters 'more likely' because of climate change

A conference on the Gold Coast has heard natural disasters have increased several-fold
since the 1950's .. and will continue to do so because of climate change.

Professor HARTWIG DE HAEN .. who used to work for the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation
.. says 79 thousand people people die from natural disasters like droughts and floods
each year.

And he says another 200 million more are directly affected.

Professor DE HAEN says the number of natural disasters is growing rapidly .. with the
global damage bill reaching 90 billion dollars a year.
