Tas: New Tasmanian chief justice sworn in

Tasmania's new chief justice has been sworn in as the dust continues to settle from
RICHARD BUTLER's whirlwind stint as governor.

Supreme Court judge Justice PETER UNDERWOOD has taken the oath of office in a brief
ceremony at Hobart's government house.

Premier PAUL LENNON, Attorney General JUDY JACKSON, senior judges and members of his
family witnessed the ceremony.

Justice UNDERWOOD takes over the state's top judicial position from Justice WILLIAM
COX, who will be sworn in as Mr BUTLER'S replacement on December the 15th.

Mr BUTLER, a former diplomat and United Nations weapons inspector, stepped down as
Tasmanian governor on August the 9th after a 10-month term dogged by controversy.
